This competition entry, “Memorial Flight Path”, was among over 800 designs submitted to honor the passengers and crew of Flight 93, which crashed at Shanksville, PA on September 11, 2001.
The memorial takes the form of a large earthen ramp whose top surface is level, yet gives the impression of rising because of the slope of the open field in which it’s set. Walking upon the top of the ramp, one passes individual glass memorial tablets. At the end of the ramp is an overlook which allows views to the crash site, the distant forest and the surrounding hills. |
