The project for the executive offices of ABC news was the winning entry of a limited design competition sponsored by the client. The conceptual goal of the design was to remove many of the hierarchical as well as physical divisions that were present in the client’s existing facility.
The planning solution brought together functions that would foster interaction and communication into a centrally located ’piazza’ type setting. This central meeting place included such social functions as a pantry, open video screening and informal seating areas. The focal point was a large glass conference table whose base included a glazed opening in the floor that allowed an overhead view into the news broadcast studio located one floor below.
The individual, glass enclosed offices formed an active backdrop to this area, further animating the space. Although not built in the form shown here, a scaled back project was constructed which implemented some of the basic concepts presented. |
